Television

Video and web conferencing. Using a small, inexpensive video camera attached to your PC, you can communicate like you're face-to-face with people across town, or across the world. Individuals and businesses use these video and web conferencing applications to share documents, make presentations, and demonstrate products and services. Some video and web conferencing services are free, and others are available for a fee. On of the pioneers in video and web conferences is Webex.

Movies and entertainment on demand. Movies, television shows and video games on DVDs are available at movie stores, libraries, as well as popular on-line services. Over high speed broadband, the same movie and television content that is available on DVDs can be downloaded over the internet and watched instantly on a PC. The PC can be connected to a television or video screen, providing the same viewing quality as a DVD player. Netflix is a subscription service that delivers movies, television, video games and other entertainment DVDÕs via the US Postal Service. Netflix also has the largest library of movies and television that be downloaded instantly.

Television can be viewed on a PC via the Internet. The major broadcast television networks and some cable TV channels offer extensive archives of previously broadcast entertainment and news on their websites. Previously broadcast ÒliveÓ news video is updated frequently on all the broadcast networks web sites. Some network and cable channels may offer a portion of their programming live and real-time. To see it live, for example, go to Fox News and click on ÒWatch LiveÓ at the top of its home page.

Radio over the Internet. Many news, talk and entertainment radio programs are available live and free on the Internet and can be played on a PC. An example is one of the largest radio stations, CBS "1010 Wins."

There are other innovative web sites that allow the user to "personalize" their radio by selecting the content that they want play over the radio. One example is Pandora Radio, a free service that offers tens of thousands of musical selections and artists ranging from classical to pop, from which the user can select their favorite music. The PC can be easily connected to a home audio system so that Pandora plays in stereo or high fidelity.
